ALLOW FIRST CLASS GRADUATES TO CONVERT LOAN TO SCHOLARSHIP

Am indeed very pleased to know that one of my points was picked up by Bernama Online.

Am sharing the article which appeared on Bernama Online and would like to thank Benama for highlighting this issue.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 (Bernama) -- A backbencher has urged the government to consider the request by 831 graduates who obtained first class honours to convert their study loans (PTPTN) to scholarships.

P. Kamalanathan (BN-Hulu Selangor) told the Dewan Rakyat that the Finance Ministry should give appropriate consideration to the requests because it could ease the burden of repaying the loan as most of the students concerned were from poor families.

"The 831 first class graduates could not convert their loans because they had started their studies during the July 2005, December 2005 and July 2006 intakes," he said when debating the motion of thanks on the Royal address at the Dewan Rakyat sitting Monday.

In tabling the 2010 budget, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had announced that the PTPTN loans be converted to scholarships for students who had completed their bachelor degrees with first class honours or equivalent beginning 2010.
